Our Story

Seasons Retreat Center was born of a reflective knowing: that the inner life shapes the outer world, and that hospitality offered with intention can become a balm for all who labor toward a more loving future. The legacy of our founder, John E. Fetzer, moves through this place like an undercurrent — his trust that science, faith, and spiritual inquiry belong in conversation, each illuminating the other, each widening our sense of what is possible.

Cradled in the wooded hills of Kalamazoo, Seasons is a home for the kinds of conversations that open the heart: brave, humble, soul-filled. Our Meeting House and guest rooms were designed not just for comfort, but also for remembering. They are intentionally designed spaces where breath slows, where clarity returns, where the sacred feels near enough to touch.

A circle of listening. A quiet walk along our forest trails. A single note of music rising in the living room. However guests choose to dwell in their time here, many speak of Seasons as a place of restoration and gentle transformation, of being returned to themselves.

At Seasons, we call our way of welcoming shared sacred hospitality. It is a reverence for each person who crosses our threshold, and for the stories, questions, and longings they carry. Over the years, seekers of many callings have added their presence to this lineage: teachers and artists, researchers and activists, scientists and poets, energetic youth and wise elders. Some renowned, some known only to a few — each leaving an imprint on the spirit of this place.

We’ve been fortunate to welcome incredible guests to Seasons like Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Parker Palmer, and Rainn Wilson. Their presence, along with many others, has helped shape Seasons into a place for reflection, connection, and meaningful conversation. We invite you to step into this reimagined space and experience the spirit they’ve helped create.
